First Batch of Typical Mediation Cases In Foreign-related Commercial and Maritime Disputes Released

On July 10, 2025, the Supreme People's Court released the first batch of typical cases focusing on mediation in foreign-related maritime and admiralty disputes. This initiative aims to advance foreign-related rule of law and support high-standard opening-up, with a distinct focus on maritime sectors. The six cases encapsulate the experience of courts across China in applying diversified dispute resolution methods to foreign-related maritime and admiralty matters in recent years, establishing a new paradigm for international maritime mediation. The cases embody core values of "mutual trust, win-win result, harmony and mutual assistance," integrating traditional Chinese culture with modern maritime legal norms.
Involving parties from six countries including Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Italy, and the United States, these cases highlight the efforts Chinese courts have made to innovate dispute resolution mechanisms in maritime fields such as shipping, marine engineering, and cargo transportation. The cases also show that Courts adhered to equal protection principles, ensuring foreign shipowners, cargo operators, and domestic maritime enterprises all enjoyed legitimate rights.
The Supreme People's Court emphasized that courts will continue prioritizing maritime and admiralty disputes, offering a "Chinese solution" marked by justice, efficiency, convenience, and low cost. This will strengthen the rule-based maritime business environment, providing robust judicial support for high-standard opening-up and high-quality development of maritime cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
