Shanghai Arbitration Commission Obtained Special Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC

On June 25, 2024, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (“ECOSOC”) officially agreed to adopt the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) to grant The Shanghai Arbitration Commission (“SHAC”) special consultative status. According to the ECOSOC website, SHAC is the first arbitration institution in the international arena to be granted special consultative status.
By obtaining special consultative status with ECOSOC, SHAC will be entitled to participate in the activities of the UN Economic and Social Council and its subsidiary bodies. Under certain conditions, SHAC could participate in meetings of the UN General Assembly and other intergovernmental bodies.
